Helpful Tips To Sail In Cold Weather

There are many sailors who wish that the boat was not laid up for the winters and have to be dragged to the sea. However, there are ways to keep yourself warm and sail easily during winter time. Some of these helpful tips have been given below.

Get a reliable outer gear

When you are dry, you are warm. Cold weather sailing gets worse when you get wet. Luckily, you can get great gears in the market. These are available in an extensive range of prices. You need good gear and sailing boots for keeping yourself dry. When you buy, make sure that you choose something that will last more than one season. You can take the recommendation of some sailors. They might be able to tell you where you can get the best bargain.

Base layers

Apart from staying warm, you need to have the right base layers which will keep you warm. If you don’t, you are going to feel terrible. The cold air over water feels much different than cold air over land. There is excessive moisture that makes it more difficult to escape it. Hence, it is necessary to ensure that you have the required pieces such as woolen or synthetic socks, mid-layer, long underwear, mittens, stocking cap, and a heavy layer.

An item that works like a charm is a woolen sweater. Look for insulated leather gloves from the hardware store. This can be a cost-effective alternative to sailing gloves.  Obviously if you’re on a Yacht Charter in Athens you’ll need different gear to being out in the Atlantic!

Disposable hand and toe warmers

You will be able to find them at the local hardware stores. Toe warmers have a sticky back that makes it ideal since you will be able to stick it to your chest or neck. Nonetheless, makes sure that you do not stick it to your skin directly. Rather, put it inside neck gaiter and stick it onto your shirt.

Face or neck guard

The sun guards which go around your neck have become quite popular and you will be able to find them in the local stores that have sporting goods. This is a nice item which will help you to keep the sun off your face and neck. Moreover, during a cold sail, it will help in keeping your face warm.

Protect the eyes

Cold air tends to make your eyes water. Moreover, it makes your face wet. Cold wind makes it difficult for you to see. In case the sunglasses are not enough, try out skiing goggles. This will protect your eyes and will cover up your exposed skin. In the daytime, use polarized or colored lenses. It will add a dimension to the flat light and enable you to see the different winds which come on water.

While sailing in cold weather, make sure that you do not eat a lot of snacks. This can take more energy to digest. Hence, it will make you feel colder. It is necessary to keep your energy levels high with the help of small snacks which are high in protein and you will be able to digest easily.
