Best transport solutions to get around Malta

The small size of the island of Malta makes it very easy to get around by different public commute services. Here are 5 of the most common transport solutions in Malta.

Car

Great for those who wish to travel at their own pace. A car can get to the locations where the buses cannot enter. Furthermore, car rental is cheap thus, fitting into most budget types. Maltese love cars. During the weekends, people visit family and friends or go to the beaches for a picnic. Most often, these trips involve cars. Therefore, you can expect serious congestion on weekends on the roads around Sliema, St. Julian, and Valletta. However, renting cars will give you much more flexibility.

Bicycles

If you are a cyclist, you must understand that cycling on Maltese roads can be difficult. Most often, the roads are narrow and potholed. There are a lot of drivers and heavy traffic who offer little to no consideration towards cyclists. However, if you do cycle on the back roads and Gozo, the roads are rough, but there is far less traffic. Nowadays, increasing number of people are opting to cycle instead of using the buses. You can get electric bikes for rent.

Boat

Ferry services are operational in Malta. You can use ferries to go from Valletta to Three Cities. Alternatively, you can also use a traditional wooden dghajsa. One way trip costs 2 euros for one person and for 8 euros, you can go on a harbour cruise.

Buses

The originally charming, brightly painted, bone-shaking vintage buses that used to be characteristics of Malta have been taken out of service since 2011 and have been replaced by the more efficient but boring-looking buses. These are operated by the Malta public transport which is run by a Spanish company. A lot of bus routes originate from Valletta bus station and radiate to the other regions of the island. There is also a variety of bus routes that bypass the capital. The bus timings can range from 10 minutes to hourly for places that are not visited frequently. However, a lot of buses run during the late parts of afternoon and evening. In Gozo, the bus system is much more efficient than what has been previously observed.

Bringing your own vehicle

In Malta, the tourists are allowed to use their own vehicles for a maximum period of six months in one year without requiring a permit. If you are bringing your own vehicle, it must have a sticker identifying the registration country.

A lot of the accommodations also have car rental arrangements. They will ask you about the same when you make a booking. Most of the car rental agencies will drop off and collect the cars for a small fee. If you want to truly explore all the nooks and crannies of Malta and do the touring at your own pace, you should opt for car rental services. Click on cool.mt for more information.
